Robert Bolt's compelling masterpiece is set against the backdrop of social, political and religious upheaval during the reign of King Henry VIII of England.

VCE English: Units 3 and 4
Text list 1
Area of study 2: Reading and responding

The play follows the life and death of Sir Thomas More in a wonderfully crafted examination of personal conscience versus political expediency.

Thomas More, Lord Chancellor of England, enters into political and moral conflict with King Henry VIII when he refuses to support the divorce of King Henry's wife, Catherine of Aragon. More's decision to endorse the divine right of the Pope over and above that of his King, leads to his unwilling martyrdom and tragic downfall.

This celebrated production is an excellent accompaniment to VCE English studies and should not be missed.

A brilliant cast led by Paul English as Sir Thomas More.
